Validation of an environmentally friendly water purification system for micro-pollutants removal and disinfection

Waste water is often polluted with, for example, plant protection products, chemicals, medicine residues and harmful micro-organisms. It is ecologically undesired that these micropollutants end up in our environment. Water Waves has been developing an innovative technology to remove micropollutants from waste water streams in the food sector and to disinfect these water streams at the same time. The result is a prototype capable of treating 1 m3/hr of water. The technology also offers a solution in other upcoming market segments such as hospital waste water treatment and municipal waste water treatment where micropollutants are an increasing issue. Dutch legislation offers an opportunity to validate and accredit the new Water Waves technology for micropollutant removal from the horticulture effluent. This independent validation, showing that a removal efficiency for pesticides greater than 95% can be achieved, helps introduction of the technology in other market segments. As long as EU policy and legislation do not require to improve the quality of waste water streams discharged to our environment, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) do not have a business case yet for developing and implementing their innovations. The VIDA voucher framework provides the financial means and required publicity, making it possible for SMEs to co-create innovations that are input for the new environmental legislation.
