Technical, economic and environmental assessment of implementation of innovative solutions to reduce energy and water consumption in a meat processing plant

Title

Technical, economic and environmental assessment of implementation of innovative solutions to reduce energy and water consumption in a meat processing plant

Duration

10 July 2020 / 10 December 2020

VIDA Challenges

Efficient Meat processing

Summary

Embutidos Bernal shows a high energy and water consumption due to their day‐to‐day internal processes. Besides, it generates waste which could be subject to valorisation to generate biofuel to be used in the plant, reducing the dependency on fossil fuels or electricity from the grid. Also, other innovative ways (new insulating materials, data management systems, equipment´s hygienic eco‐design, etc.) to improve energy efficiency and water management could be integrated in processes to reduce their consumption. The project will develop a complete technical and economic analysis of the different processes and methods studied in order to improve efficiency of the water and energy management. It will thus aim to produce biofuel from wastes of the factory and implement other renewable energy sources in order to reduce its carbon footprint and increase its environmental sustainability.
