Water quality is crucial in the food sector, and a very significant cost. Excellence in the management of the water cycle in the food industry is key. In comparison with other sectors, the agro-food industry is largely made up of small companies, with relatively scarce resources to optimise the management of their water cycle. Being able to access an inexpensive management tool such as Smart-Water TPM, these companies could greatly reduce water consumption and resources used in the management of their water cycle. The aim of Smart Water TPM is to provide small SMEs an inexpensive tool to monitor and carry out the maintenance in their water cycle. The objective of the project is to adapt a tool that is tablet-based on daily use, backing-up collected data on a cloud server. This tool was initially designed for implementation on local servers, at a much higher operational cost.

Maintenance strategy in the agro-food sector is hugely diverse between companies. This is an area with little or no stardardization, as there is no communication between companies in this aspect. Creating a standard app that gathers data from different companies could bridge this gap.

As of today, most companies undertake maintenance tasks on water treatment systems using simple printed-out check lists, or simply rely on the experience of the operators. By using Smart-Water TPM, companies ensure that maintenance is carried out in an orderly manner, as well as being able to store all historical data: numerical values, photos, dates, times, types of failure, etc.

This project has enabled Cognit to adapt the Smart Water TPM tool for cloud use, making it cost-effective for future clients, and easier for large-scale deployment. In the proposed virtualised state, by analysing the data from a virtualised app, Cognit will be able to suggest new optimised routes, with the following benefits to the end-customer:

– Minimise time and effort spent on duplicate or redundant maintenance tasks.

– Minimise failures in areas where insufficient maintenance is carried out.

– Avoid failures through the use of intelligent alarms.

Overall, better maintenance standards will result in fewer failures, better maintenance and ultimately cost reduction in the agro-food sector.
